Alan R Smith Construction was established in 2008 by local owners Alan and Carolynn Smith.  Both Alan and Carolynn were born and raised on the South West Gulf Coast of Florida.  Both still have very strong family ties to the area of Placida in Charlotte County.  After getting married in 2002, they purchased a home locally, in which to raise their family.

Alan began his construction career over 20 years ago, working for a contractor on Little Gasparilla Island.  During his time with this company he assisted in new home construction. Building a house on a barrier island is a unique experience that begins with driving pylons for the house to sit on.  Little Gasparilla Island adds to this uniqueness by requiring all materials, tools, and workers to travel to the island via boat.  All materials are hauled from the mainland before construction can even begin.  Working for this contractor allowed Alan the opportunity to learn how to build a home on the island from pylons to punch out.

After a few years off to help his family on their commercial clam farm, Alan took the opportunity to get back into construction with the acceptance of a job offer to work for another construction company where he worked as a trim framer on Boca Grande.  His experience with this organization allowed him the opportunity to focus on intricate framework required to build the mansions on the upscale island of Boca Grande.  Alan left this company to become a corrections officer with the Charlotte County Sheriffs Department.  His love of building brought him back to Little Gasparilla Island a few years later, to continue working with his friend at the original construction company where his construction career started.

Alan and Carolynn purchased their first home in 2004 and were forced to rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Charley.  After an extensive remodel of the hurricane ravaged home, in 2006, they bought a lot and decided to build a new, bigger home, where they could expand their ideas and raise their family. The economy eventually led Alan to branch out on his own, and in 2008, Alan obtained his General Contractor’s License and started Alan R Smith Construction.  Alan also obtained his roofing license through the State of Florida, and he has already begun constructing new metal roofs on existing homes to island residents.

The experience, knowledge, and wisdom gained from working on the custom homes offered on Boca Grande and Little Gasparilla Island prepared Alan for the industry challenges and the unique nature of each build.  His extensive resume gives Alan the foresight to see problems before they occur, and troubleshoot situations that others may overlook.  Some of Alan’s customers have nicknamed him MacGyver because of his ability to creatively solve difficult situations.

Unlike most contractor’s, Alan and his small crew work side by side on each job.  This family-run operation gives Alan’s family the opportunity to routinely join him on the job site.  It is not unusual to see Alan and Carolynn with the children in tow, checking on the progress of the projects.  When Carolynn is not answering emails, scheduling projects, and keeping the bills paid, she is a stay at home mom, and a Registered Nurse.
